Gov. Peter Mbah of Enugu State says one of his visions is to enhance the productivity of civil servants in the state.
Mbah said this in Enugu at the 3-Day Training and Capacity Building on Productivity Enhancement and Tracking Model for Enugu State Public Service.
The training was organised by the Enugu State Government in collaboration with the Ministry of Labour and Employment and the National Productivity Centre (NPC).
Mbah said his vision for Enugu was to foster a public service that would meet the global service standards and required global framework to productivity enhancement and rigorous tracking of progress.
The governor, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, added that the training was designed to equip the civil servants with the knowledge necessary to achieve his administration’s goals.
Mbah described public service as the backbone that would assist the government and its development growth projection.
He stressed that through the Ministry of Labour and Productivity, his administration would be introducing a comprehensive productivity enhancement model that focused on improved performance, increased accountability and streamline processes.
“In this training, you will be introduced to specific tools and methodologies that will enable you to apply the model effectively.
.
“Your roles are crucial in implementing government policy, delivery services and driving progresses across the various sectors.
“Our goal is to create a dynamic and responsible public service that is capable of meeting the evolving needs of our citizens while still developing Enugu,” Mbah said.
Speaking, the Director- General, NPC, Dr Baffa Danagundi, said that level of productivity was the most fundamental factor that determined the standard of living.
He said it allowed people get what they wanted faster with the same amount of time.
According to him, higher level of labour productivity equals higher economic output and lower inflation with growth in productivity.
“Consequently, labour productivity growth is crucial to increased wages, standards of living and also increase consumers’ purchasing power,’’ he said.
“It is in a bid to improve productivity in Enugu that led to the signing of Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Enugu State Ministry of Labour on July 12.
He explained that the purpose of the MOU was to build the momentum for change through a holistic capacity building programme.
Danagundi stressed that such training became necessary since no organisation, institution or nation could fare better than the quality of its human resource in terms of the ability to create, innovate, add value and generate wealth.
“The character, skills and competence of every workforce determine to a very large extend how far an organisation will go in achieving their organisational objectives,” he said.
Earlier, Mr Chika Ugwuoke, the State Commissioner for Labour and Employment, said civil servants would be assessed based on their performance and contributions to the growth and productivity of the state.
He said those trained included permanent secretaries, directors and administrators at the local government level.
