Awka, July 12 2024 About 200 suspected criminals have been arrested by the anti-crime operatives of the Anambra State Police Command.
The Commissioner of police,Anambra State Command , CP Nnaghe Itam, said on Friday during a median news conference with journalists at police state command, Amawbia, Awka South Local Government Area,LGA of Anambra.
The CP said that the command had also gotten six of the suspects convicted by the Courts.
Itam said the feats were achieved within the past two months he was deployed to the state.
He further stated that during the periods the state police command ‘s operatives has recovered about 1,644 ammunition.
Itam disclosed that some of the suspects arrested included kidnappers, cultists, car snatchers, amongst others.
Itam disclosed that he is putting in place operational strategies to make sure that within ten minutes a crime is reported at any police station in any part of the state, a response team would storm the scene.
He commended the state governor, Prof Chukwuma Soludo for supporting the efforts of the state police command, and, also the sister security agencies, including the state security services (SSS),
Also he commended the support of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), vigilant groups in helping the police in fighting crime and criminalities.
The Commissioner urged the public to give quality informations at their disposal always to make the police work effectively and provide the service needed by the public.
He said that he had engaged with key stakeholders in the state including traditional rulers, religious bodies and community leaders..
Itam said that he has reasoned with the traditional rulers to redefine any of their cultural practices that encroaches on fundamental human rights to avoid social clash.
He said actions like land grappling voodoo pratices,cultism,violence or abuse of persons freedom will not be allowed to thrive in the state.
He advised any person or group of persons under any unlawful guise to threaten the peace of the state to have a rethink because their illegitimate actions will be resisted by the police command.
Itam said that police do not treat social media causes that relates to police rather advised that any issues of concern should be directed to the command public relation unit.
The mandate reports that One of the suspects, 60 years old Mr. Dominic Iyetu, a native of Okija in Ihiala LGA was paraded along with his 25 years old son, Chinedu, for stealing a Lexus 300 jeep.
The suspect said that he was gifted the vehicle by his son, Chinedu.
He stated that he and his son were bicycle repairers, and sellers.
He further said that thought that his son made money from his other business other thsn the bicycle business.
“When he gifted me the jeep, I thought he probably had made the money from other sources like ‘betnaija’,he said.
Another suspect, Mr. Chidera Sunday also aged about 25 years from Umuchu, Aguata LGA arrested in connection with kidnapping and wearing Army camouflage uniform denied engaging in kidnapping.
Sunday claimed that he just war the Army camouflage uniform to a wedding ceremony when he was nabbed.
